FRANCIS E. McSWEENY
Mathematics Teacher 1963 1996
For thirty-four years Frank McSweeny served Mount Greylock as a gifted and challenging
teacher of mathematics, imparting to his students the discipline, rigor, and excitement of
mathematics thinking. Franks obvious enjoyment of the beauty and structure of
mathematics sparked a love for the discipline in innumerable students. An early and
enthusiastic advocate of computer technology, he taught programming to the first
generation of students ever to study computer science.
As departmental coordinator for many years, Frank helped define the mathematics program at
Mount Greylock. Dedicated to the professional development of his colleagues, he created
pioneering inservice courses on computer technology and was one of the first faculty
members to bring in funding from outside grants. Frank served as the schools
National Honor Society advisor for many years. A devotee of theater, he directed and
appeared in faculty plays and brought many of Mount Greylocks annual student
musicals to glorious fruition. Frank McSweenys long and distinguished tenure
immeasurably enriched the school community.
