JOHN W. McGOWEN
School Committee 1965 - 1972

John McGowen served the Lanesborough and Mount Greylock communities in various capacities for many years. He was past president of the Lanesborough Athletic Directors and founder and co-director of the Lanesborough Community Scholarship Fund.

As a member of the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee from l965-l972 and its chairman for three years, John served as a voice of reason, cooperation, compassion, and innovation. An avid supporter of the ABC program and a firm believer in the opportunity it provided, John cast the deciding vote in l970 to keep the program in place. An innovator and progressive thinker, in 1971 John appointed a committee for the “exploration and development of dynamic courses at Mount Greylock.” Recognizing the importance of the arts in education, John was active in the Friends of Music, serving as its president and treasurer.

John McGowen served Mount Greylock and his community long and well.
