LOLA GREENE
Latin Teacher 1986 – 1999
Lola Greene embodied the Latin program at Mt. Greylock Regional High School. She wove historical, literary, and cultural lessons into the teaching of language. Enthusiastic about the subject and cogent in her presentation, Lola inspired her students to embrace the challenges and explore the broader context of the language. Her generous demeanor also attracted students to the Latin program. She combined warmth with wisdom, acting as a counselor to scores of students and adults.

Lola’s success can be measured in part by the achievement of the Junior Classical League under her leadership. Mount Greylock’s JCL frequently placed first in the state competition—the equivalent of being the best "Latin school" in Massachusetts—and her students routinely constituted a large percentage of high scorers on the National Latin Exam.

Beyond the statistics, however, her success lay in the hundreds of students who developed an appreciation and understanding, if not a love, for this most difficult and rewarding area of study. Lola Greene’s legacy is a Latin program that remains alive and well at Mt. Greylock.
