MAURICE FILLER
Guidance Counselor 1961 - 1984

Few people have exerted a more profound or a more salutary influence on the young Mount Greylock than Maurice Filler. Urbane, witty, intellectually curious, he valued traditional education as a way for people to improve their lives and to develop a truly democratic society. Maurie was, above all, humane – a gentle and caring person who treated everyone as a valued individual. His contributions to faculty discussions were esteemed for their incisiveness, wisdom, and breadth of experience.

In order to promote continuing education, Maurie initiated efforts to create the Williamstown Community Association Fund, which granted scholarships to Williamstown graduates. Over five decades he ran drives to make the fund grow and awarded financial aid to hundreds of students.

When one faculty member was asked to describe Maurie, she chose the words, “kind, considerate, civilizing, and refining.”
