Look Through Our Windows
A Virtual Tour of Mt. Greylock Regional School
I. A Brief History of Our Most Requested Course

Stained glass at Mt. Greylock began in 1989 as an
experiential course -- hands-on, no homework, pass/fail grade. Although highly
successful, experientials were cancelled after a year because of staffing and scheduling
problems. Students, however, signed petitions to get the stained glass class
reinstated, and the school committee agreed. The new stained glass course is still
semster-long and pass/fail, but now offers credit toward graduation. In the
2000-2001 school year, this course was offered twice each semester, and an advanced course
was added. Originally enrollment was limited to 12; that's since been upped to 16.
The program is the child
of Dr. Bill Pommy. After having taught
freshman and sophomore English for 20 years, Pommy brought his expertise in stained
glass to the classroom. He had at one point built up his own business to include two
retail stores and over 100 wholesale accounts, and was now able to bring that experience
to the students. After an initial outlay of about $700 for tools and equipment, the
class set about learning the copper foil method. As a culminating project, the class
planned to make a window for the school.
Since the class' inception, Mt. Greylock has gained 27 windows of
varying sizes, styles and designs -- one per semester per class. There are windows
celebrating student activities and windows commemorating deceased faculty and students. On
the border of each window, Pommy engraves the names of those students who have worked on
it.
"With sunlight streaming through it, the window offers a kind of
restoration of spirit on a particularly stressful day," says Pommy.
II. Take the Tour

the stained glass windows. You may either take a guided tour or wander at your own
pace. Enjoy.
