Concert Review
Pre-writing organizer
In planning your concert review, it may help for you to
consider the following structure for outlining your paper. We have suggested a five paragraph format
which would allow you to meet the “one page long” minimum requirement but also to
help you organize your thoughts and ideas in a structure that does not resemble
simply a “play by play” list of events. Read reviews in local newspapers or
student works posted in your classrooms for good examples of concert reviews.

Paragraph 2 – Make an
observation
Choose one or more of the following or identify some
other noteworthy feature of this performance. Describe it. What makes it
worthy of mention in a review?
- An element of music (melody, harmony,
dynamics, rhythm, form, timbre, style)
- Instrumentation (solo with large ensemble,
unusual instruments, etc.)
- Performance practice and its impact
- Stage placement (Where are the musicians
located in the hall or in relation to each other?)
- Stage presence, dress, and demeanor (What do
they look like? How do they behave?)

Paragraph 4 – Compare and
Contrast
Based on your observations above, what comparisons
can you make between movements or entire compositions performed to each
other or to compositions studied at Mt. Greylock? What contrasts can you make?
