Options and Preparation
for
PSAT & SAT
First a word about the two tests. The SAT I measures verbal and
mathematical reasoning abilities as they relate to performance in college. Students
receive one point for each correct response and lose a fraction of a point for each
incorrect response. Scores totaled from both sections range from 400 to 1600. While
similar to the SAT in measuring English and mathematics knowledge, the ACT (American
College Test) also measures reading (prose fiction, humanities, social studies and natural
sciences) and science reasoning (biology, chemistry, physical science and physics) skills.
Scores are based entirely on correct answers. Registration materials for both the SAT and
ACT are available in the guidance office. If you are not sure which test to take (you may
want to consider taking both), please talk it over with your guidance counselor.
It is important to prepare for the ACT and SAT and there are a variety
of books, software products and tutors available to help you. Find a method that fits your
schedule and budget. Far too many students walk into the tests "cold" either
because they find standardized tests frightening or annoying or they couldn't find time to
study. Begin by reviewing your PSAT test and incorrect answers. Stop by guidance and
request test preparation booklets that provide test-taking strategies and sample test
questions for the SAT and ACT. Review math formulas, vocabulary words and the directions
for each question type or test section. Plan to take at least one practice test and review
your mistakes so you don't make them again on test day. Click on these web sties for
