: If you are within 30 days of your 18th birthday, federal law requires you to register with Selective Service. Registering allows you to receive federal student loans for college, participate in federal job training programs, and have the opportunity to work in the federal government. Registering is simple and easy. Just fill out and return the registration card you receive in the mail or go to the post office to fill out a form. Even better, register online at www.sss.gov.

Visit the College and Career Center during extended period and after school on Tuesdays to look up college information and career options. College videos, catalogs, and viewbooks are available. Get a pass from the guidance office.

Two Web sites provided by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Mass. are designed for students and their families.

  1. www.massmentor.edu is an interactive Web site that helps students plan their high school courses to meet college admissions requirements, provides a wealth of information on admissions and financial aid, takes students on virtual tours, determines what colleges best meet students' needs, processes college applications and the transfer of FAFSA data online, and has a career planning module to assist students in starting to think about careers.
  2. www.masscolleges.org is packed with general information about admissions and financial aid, as well as specific information about costs, admissions requirements and deadlines for applications, research and data about the independent higher education sector in Mass., and links to specific sources of information about financial aid.

The Mass. Career Information System’s web site, http://.masscis. intocareers.org, is an excellent resource for Mass. training schools, career and job search, and national college information.

The Holocaust Remembrance Project is a national essay/ scholarship contest for high school students that is designed to encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust. See Mrs. Gill or Mr. Ostheimer for more information. Apr. 30 deadline.

If you are interested in a process to document your community service hours, pick up forms in the guidance office. Students should contact Ms. Giannini, the community service coordinator, who works in the Career & College Center every Thursday during extended. Many scholarships are based on your involvement in volunteering and service which may need verification. Check with your counselor for more information.

See your history teacher if you would be interested in participating in the Duke Moot Court Competition that will focus on the First Amendment, or the American Legion Oratorical Contest that focuses on the Constitution.

    College bound juniors should take the SAT I or the ACT sometime during second semester. Signup deadline for the June 5 SAT test is April 29. Registration and test materials are available in guidance. Online information about SAT registration, as well as additional college and financial aid information can be found at www. collegeboard.com.
   ACT Assessment is given June 12 with a registration deadline of May 7. Registration materials are also available in the guidance office or online at www.act.org.
    Don’t forget to pick up your PSAT exam booklet in guidance to review for the upcoming SAT tests.

Many colleges offer OPEN HOUSE events for juniors in the spring. Contact the schools that interest you to find out when activities are planned.

Mt. Greylock’s Service Learning Coordinator, Evadne Giannini, can help you fine opportunities and has information on special community service projects. She comes to school every Thursday during extended and you can meet with her in the College and Career Center. In order for your community service hours to qualify, you must contact Ms. Giannini personally. Check out Service Learning on our web site.

Williams College Summer Fellowships in Biological Sciences are offered for juniors interested in participating in ongoing biological research projects. See your science teacher or guidance counselor for further information. April 30 application deadline.
